WWE Smackdown Recap (May 2nd 2017)

We start with Shane McMahon backstage, telling Jinder that the title isn't his so he's taking it back. And does.

The show proper kicks off with Shane introducing Jericho as the newest member of Smackdown. This is the new show of Jericho, smack it down maaaan! AJ Styles comes out to say that he will beat Jericho, if Jericho can beat Owens. Jericho is about to put AJ on the list when Owens comes out. He runs all 3 men down which leads to Styles attacking him. Good start to the show. Get your main stars out and let them do their thing.

The first match of the night is Jinder Mahal vs Sami Zayn. Pretty decent match but with one noticeable botch. Sami is really good at playing the face that almost wins so it makes sense that he was used here. Once again it was distraction that caused Jinder's opponent to lose. Keep him sneaky strong.

Becky Lynch runs in to Natalya and her crew. Natalya tells her that she deserves title shots instead of Charlotte. Becky said she will ponder on it.

There is a video package for Nakamura followed by Dolph Ziggler saying that Nakamura hasn't proved a thing. He says he will prove himself against Sin Cara.

Aiden English is out to do his singing thing. He is wrestling Tye Dillinger. Dillinger wins in a minute.
English gets pissed.

Jericho is being interviewed by Renee Young when an upset Aiden English walks past. Jericho tries to cheer him up and then he puts 'Ronnie' Young on the list.

There is a recap of last week's women's title match. Charlotte says she will still win the title and is then attacked by Natalya Inc. They welcome her to Smackdown. Again.

Charlotte & Naomi vs Carmella & Natalya is next. It's a pretty good match with some good work in establishing Charlotte as a face. Naomi starts the match alone after the beatdown on Charlotte but the odds get evened when Charlotte makes her triumphant return. In the end a distraction from Ellsworth is enough to allow Carmella to pick up the win. Following the match Nattie and friends continue the beatdown which brings out Becky Lynch who shakes hands with the heels before swerving them. She gets beaten down too and the heels stand tall.

We get another New Day video. One day they will turn up.

It's Ziggler vs Sin Cara up next. WWE's insistence on 50-50 booking hit it's nadir here. How are we supposed to believe that Ziggler stands a chance against Nakamura if he struggles to beat Sin Cara? The match was poor too.

Dancing Lana video. I doubt the need for this gimmick change.

Fashion Police time. They run down a list of crimes committed by the Usos. It's hilarious. They say the big bust is going down on May 21st in the 'Windy Apple', Chicago. Fandango is one of the funniest people on the roster, hands down. I hope they win the titles.

It's main event time, Kevin Owens gets his US Title rematch against Chris Jericho. Styles is banned from ringside. I would say this match was as good as the one at Payback, maybe a touch better. It has a really nice back and forth flow to it. The tide turned when Owens hit a DDT on the ramp. They get back in the ring and Owens hits a superkick for 2 before putting Jericho away with the Pop-Up Powerbomb. Following the match Owens hits another Pop-Up Powerbomb before placing a chair around Jericho's head and running him into the ring post. This was the exact way I expected the show to end but it was a strong finish nonetheless. Jericho gets written off for his tour and has a ready built feud when he returns and Owens can move on to his feus with Styles.

Thoughts

This was as run of the mill as it gets. The opening segment and the main event were both really good but the rest of the show can be easily be skipped. The Fashion Police segment is hilarious too.

Comments

  1. Ziggler needs to do something, anything to seem relevant again- The Miz feud kinda rebuilt him then nothing. An absence from TV for a while wouldn't hurt him at all.
