AAA TripleMania XXVII Review

I am a few days late on getting round to watching this show (work really eats into my wrestling time) but late is better than never. I have heard nothing but good things about this, and if it proves to be as entertaining as last year's event then we are in for a treat.

Preshow: Astrolux, Arkangel Divino & Dragon Bane vs Arez, Toxin & Aramis

This was a wild way to open the show. This was the showcase for unsigned luchadores, and once again it made me wonder what some of them have to do to get signed. If you want to pump up a crowd then this is the way to do it. Watch this match if you like bonkers high flying craziness. Dragon Bane is a fucking boss. ****

AAA Mixed Tag Team Titles - Big Mami & Nino Hamburgesa vs Sammy Guevara & Scarlett Bordeaux vs Lady Maravilla & Villano III Jr vs Australian Suicide & Vanilla

This was a fun match that had some good wrestling but was held together more by its storytelling. Mami and Hamburguesa have held these titles for about 2 years, so it was quite a shock to see them lose it. A well told, well executed shock. It wasn't perfect as there was were some scrappy moments, but overall it was the right way to kick off the main show. Sammy and Scarlett are great together too. ***1/2

Konnan comes out and cuts a promo that, while I didn't understand very much of it, seemed very impassioned.

We get tributes to Perro Aguayo and Silver King as well as Silver King being inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame. It was very respectful and well done.

AAA Trios Titles - Los Jinetes del Aire (Hijo del Vikingo, Myzteziz Jr & Golden Magic) vs Las Fresas Salvajes (Mamba, Pimpinela Escarlata & Maximo) vs El Poder del Norte (Tito Santana, Mocho Cota Jr & Carta Brava Jr)

Another match that was a blast to watch. It did a great job of highlighting the different styles of lucha libre and was wall to wall action. You can't really ask for more than that from a match like this. The star of the match was Vikingo, who is an absolute star at just 22 years old. He had a wonderful match with Laredo Kid in June and this was another feather in his cap. Lovely stuff. ****

Copa TripleMania

This is a Royal Rumble style match that also involves pinfalls. It is also more fast paced. As is to be expected from a match like this, it was a fun time, with a bunch of special moments. Aerostar's entrance, diving from a platform lowered from the ceiling, was something to behold. We also got the continuation of the Konnan-Vampiro rivalry that has been ongoing for 30 years. Pagano won the match by last eliminating Chessman. The whole thing worked well and kept up the quality of this show, which is top notch so far. ***1/2

After the match, LA Park appeared and beat the piss out of Pagano. He then challenged Pagano to an extreme Hair vs Mask Apuestas match before turning his attention to AAA owner Marisela Pena. This whole thing was great because LA Park is a wrestling god.

AAA Reina de Reinas Title, TLC Match - Taya vs Tessa Blanchard vs Faby Apache vs Chik Tormenta vs Lady Shani vs La Hiedra vs Ayako Hamada

Keyra was originally supposed to defend her title in this match but due to injury she was unable to compete. This led to Ayako Hamada making a surprise return to take her place. This may have been the weakest match of the show so far but it was still non-stop entertainment. It was also a wild brawl that involved tacks, staples, and whatever else they could get their hands on. Unfortunately, it looked like Chik Tormenta got injured in the match, so I hope she recovers quickly. Tessa won the vacant title after pushing Taya from the ladder. ***1/2

Killer Kross, Black Taurus & Texano Jr vs Psycho Clown, Cody & Cain Velasquez

Yet another match that overperformed the expectations I had for it. Cain Velasquez, for his first match in pro wrestling, was pretty damn impressive, busting out ranas and springboard armdrags like it's nothing. The wrestling on show was very good, as I expected from some big guns, and they did some good story building between Velasquez and Kross which you can pump into my veins right now. It was a well booked piece of wrestling all round that got more eyes on AAA and put Velasquez in the ring with a number of wrestling's most important people in Cody and Psycho Clown. Great stuff. ***3/4

Kenny Omega & Young Bucks vs Lucha Bros & Laredo Kid

There was absolutely nothing wrong with this match but the law of diminishing returns was in full effect. I have seen some variety of this match a whole hell of a lot in the last year and they didn't really do anything different here to separate it from those other matches. Probably better than the rating I'm giving it but I couldn't get fully invested. ***

After the match, Kenny challenged Fenix for his AAA Mega Championship. Fenix accepted. If it is as good as their match at the NEW indie show then we are in for a treat.

Mask vs Hair Apuestas - Blue Demon Jr vs Dr Wagner Jr

We started off with both men staring each other down as a video package played that recapped their rivalry. It was great. It is very, very rare to see a match that manages to portray hatred as believably as this, it was spectacular. The way both men approached this made it seem like it was the only thing that mattered and that it made it feel like a truly momentous occasion, which it was. Both men bled heavily, Demon glassed Wagner and attacked his hand with a hammer and ended up beating him after hitting him in the head with a cinderblock. It was something else and even in defeat Wagner remained one of the coolest dudes on the planet. Must see stuff from two veterans. ****3/4

After the match Wagner announced his retirement and said that his family will continue his legacy. Demon said that Wagner's legacy will never match that of Demon and his sons. Blue Demon Jr is a dick.

Overall Grade - A+

There have been higher quality wrestling shows this year than TripleMania XXVII but I'm not sure that there have been any that were as gloriously fun to watch. From start to finish it was a joy and the time flew by. Go out of your way to watch this show, it was a delight.
