Best Matches Of February 2019

It's safe to say that 2019 hasn't started with the quite frankly insane level of quality that 2018 did, but there has still been a bunch of great wrestling to be had. There will be no honourable mentions this month.

15. Austin Theory vs Darby Allin (Evolve Title) - Evolve 121 ****

14. Chad Gable & Bobby Roode vs The Revival (Raw Tag Titles) - WWE Raw 11th February ****

13. WALTER vs Pac - OTT Homecoming 2 ****

12. Kofi Kingston vs Daniel Bryan vs AJ Styles vs Randy Orton vs Jeff Hardy vs Samoa Joe (Gauntlet) - WWE Smackdown 12th February ****

11. Aussie Open vs Swords Of Essex (PROGRESS Tag Titles) - PROGRESS Chapter 84: Eskewed Beef ****

10. Titan vs El Barbaro Cavernario (2/3 Falls) - CMLL 22nd February ****

9. WALTER vs Veit Muller - wXw Dead End ****

8. Buddy Murphy vs Akira Tozawa (Cruiserweight Title) - WWE Elimination Chamber

For me, this was the best Kickoff match ever. I know that isn't the highest of bars to get over but this was a great match that just shows how good these two are when they are given some time. ****1/4

7. Pac vs Will Ospreay - RPW High Stakes

This was an excellent match, up until the somewhat predictable Dusty finish. This is still well worth checking out though. ****1/4

6. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Jay White (IWGP Title) - NJPW New Beginning In Osaka

The day Jay White took the step to the top of the New Japan card. This was a great match, and it did a very good job of setting up White as the new top guy in the company. They still have some work to go but this was a good start. ****1/4

5. Ricochet, Aleister Black & Velveteen Dream vs Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa - WWE Half Time Heat

This match didn't have any story, and basically no psychology, but the match was just such a well done condensed sprint that it doesn't really matter. This hit the spot for what it needed to be and it was a damn sight better than watching Maroon 5 at the Super Bowl. ****1/2

4. David Starr vs Jordan Devlin - OTT Homecoming 2

This was a great match that continued the well done story between the two and set up Devlin's title match with WALTER at Scrappermania 5. Both men are at the absolute top of their game to start this year and this match is definitely worth going out of your way to find. ****1/2

3. Kento Miyahara vs Suwama (Triple Crown) - AJPW Excite Series Day 10

This was an excellent title match that was gripping throughout. It may have gone a touch long but that didn't really take anything away from it and both men came out looking great. I have heard that Miyahara's match against KAI from January is better but I haven't had the chance to check it out yet. ****1/2

2. Daniel Bryan vs Kofi Kingston vs AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe vs Randy Orton vs Jeff Hardy (WWE Title, Elimination Chamber Match) - WWE Elimination Chamber

This makes it this high on the list because the last 10 minutes are something truly great. The exchanges between Bryan and Kofi were excellent and the crowd was fully behind a title change, creating a great atmosphere. Sure, the first two-thirds of the match aren't anything that particularly stands above the usual Elimination Chamber match but the finish is superb storytelling. ****3/4

1. Pac vs Kzy (Open The Dream Gate Title) - Dragon Gate Truth Gate

While Pac's 'dream matches' in other companies have been somewhat tainted by cheap finishes to save face for both wrestlers, his work in Dragon Gate has been a step above. He is every bit the bastard he claims to be. This match was intense, with both men throwing everything at it, including a tombstone from the ropes by Pac. This was top level stuff. ****3/4
