Lucha Underground Ultima Lucha Tres Review

As all four episodes of Ultima Lucha Tres have been broadcast, I thought I would write a very quick review of all of the matches as if it were one show. After all, there is a chance that this may be the last show that Lucha Underground ever put on.

Texano's Contract On The Line - Famous B & Dr Wagner Jr vs Texano

There wasn't much to this. Famous B did his comedy thing, announced that Dr Wagner would be his partner and won by screwy finish. It was exactly what was expected. **

Hell of War Match - Dante Fox vs Killshot

This was a 3 Stages of Hell match with the stipulations being First Blood, No DQ and Ambulance match. It is one of the most violent matches that has ever been broadcast on TV, most matches this violent are in companies that use VOD or DVD as their primary sources. There are some insane bumps in this that deserve to seen by all wrestling fans. Violent and brilliant. ****1/2

Unique Opportunity Battle Royale

It was a battle royale, and a very short one at that. The Mack won and was given a trios title match. His partners would be the two men who had tried to kill each other in the last match. *

Ivelisse vs Catrina

I had no expectations for this match but I was pleasantly surprised. There was a great level of intensity to it, with Ivelisse bleeding heavily after having a bottle smashed over her head. The finish did kind of come a bit out of nowhere though and that hurt the match a little bit. ***

Mask vs Hair - Fenix vs Marty 'The Moth' Martinez

This is a match where the story is of more importance than the quality of the wrestling, even though that was excellent. It was another match where the hatred between the two competitors shone through. The story here though was that love will overcome hate. Great match. ****1/4

Last Luchadora Standing - Taya vs Sexy Star

This show is full of blow off matches for really heated feuds and because of that there are a lot of bloody matches. The crowd is hot for this and both women do a great job with the stipulation. This match was filmed a long time before Sexy Star's incident in AAA so the crowd was still on her side here. ***1/2

Trios Titles - Reptile Tribe (Drago, Vibora & Pindar) vs The Mack, Dante Fox & Killshot

This was a fun match and despite Fox and Killshot trying to murder each other they coexisted well enough to pick up the victory. ***1/2

Gift of the Gods Title, Ladder Match - Pentagon Dark vs Son of Havoc

This was a very enjoyable ladder match. They made good use of the ladders and kept the pace at a good standard throughout. It maintained the high standard of this year's Ultima Lucha. ***3/4

Steel Cage Match - Matanza vs Dragon Azteca Jr

This was a fun match but not as good as I thought it would be given those involved. This was partly due to the changing of the rules mid match (which stemmed from a quality spot where Matanza suplexed Azteca through the cage to the floor). This was more about the story than the match and it wasn't pulled off as well as the mask vs hair match. ***

Elimination Match, Winner Gets the Gauntlet of Power - Cage vs Jeremiah Crane vs Mil Muertes

Now this was a really fun and brutal match that unfortunately fell off a touch in the final stretch which stopped it from being truly great. The blood flows freely here and Cage even gets some wooden stakes stuck in his head. Fun for all the family. ***3/4

Lucha Underground Title vs Career - Johnny Mundo vs Prince Puma

This was a great match, as would be expected from the men involved. Mundo had spent the entire season fucking people over to keep his title so the fans were over the moon to see Puma take the strap from him, and keep his career. ****

That wasn't the end of the show though. Dario Cueto came out and said that Pentagon had asked for his title match to be granted and he obliged. Puma will have defend his title right now. Oh, and it's loser leaves Lucha Underground.

Lucha Underground Title, Loser Leaves Lucha Underground - Prince Puma vs Pentagon Dark

This was a much shorter match than the one before it but it was still good for what it was. Puma looked like he had the match won but Vampiro pulled Pentagon out of the way of the 630, allowing Pentagon to pick up the win. Pentagon is champion, finally, and Prince Puma is gone. Vampiro had spent the entire season setting Puma up. ***1/2

Overall Grade - A-

If this does end up being the last Lucha Underground show then they went out with a bang. A number of excellent matches and some fantastic storytelling to boot. Well worth anybody's time.
