WWE Smackdown Recap (4th July 2017)

We start the show with John Cena. Of course we do, it's Independence Day. He bigs up America and says that he isn't a part-timer, he's an all-timer. He says line up Styles, Nakamura, Owens, Orton, Mahal, Rollins, Joe, Lesnar and Reigns and he will knock every one of them down. He is then interrupted by the returning Rusev. We then get some America is great, no it isn't, back and forth. Cena challenges him to a flag match and Rusev accepts, but not tonight. This started off really well, with great fire from Cena, but it fell off a cliff when they went with the whole nationalistic nonsense from the 80s. Both men deserve better.

Owens doesn't want Styles and Gable in the battle royal tonight so Bryan books Styles vs Gable with the winner getting in.

AJ Styles vs Chad Gable - This was a good match but one that was a touch too short to be any more than that. This appears to be the WWE testing Gable for a singles run. Styles won with the Phenomenal Forearm.

Zack Ryder tells Mojo that he got them into the battle royal. Mojo says that he has already won the biggest battle royal, the Andre Memorial. I think he may be forgetting the Royal Rumble.

Carmella and Ellsworth are out to celebrate Carmella's win. Carmella mocks the fans, telling them that they can't always get what they want. Naomi comes out with a glowing belt that really is the ugliest fucking belt I've ever seen. The Universal Title is a masterpiece in comparison. She says that she is the champion, not Carmella. That is a shame as at least Carmella wouldn't have a glowing fucking belt. Naomi brings out Daniel Bryan who contemplates what to do with Ellsworth. He decides to ban him from the arena, fine him $10k and suspend him without pay for 30 days. This was a fine segment, eye damage not withstanding.

Naomi vs Lana (SD Women's Title) - This is one of the shortest matches in WWE history. It lasts 5 seconds. What was the point?

Tamina arrives and tells Lana to get up. I guess that Lana is now her prison wife.

Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura have a brawl backstage.

It's time for the rap battle. They throw some good jabs at each other, including mentioning the Paige sex tape, but it's still a rap battle so it's upside is limited. Kofi did not do well here. It felt really long too.

Randy Orton vs Aiden English - This was OK. Orton got disqualified for attacking English on the outside. He didn't give a shit.

Mahal comes out and says America sucks. Orton says Mahal sucks. This build up sucks.

Tyler Breeze is dressed as a woman to interview Tye Dillinger, who is apparently still alive. Fandango is dressed as a construction worker in the background.

Renee Young is interviewing Mike and Maria Bennett about the power of love. Sami Zayn accidentally causes technical difficulties. Bennett is bemused.

Battle Royal for Number One Contendership to the US Title - It was a battle royal, they all play out very similar to each other. The only notable moments were Mojo eliminating Zack Ryder and Styles winning by last eliminating Sami Zayn.

Overall Thoughts

It wasn't horrible but there is literally nothing you need to go out of your way to see on this show. Generic TV.
